One night in late 2001 when I could not sleep, I got up and played with a stick of graphite. In a very few minutes, I created a drawing beyond anything I had done before.

At the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, I observed a collection of photographs of children by Laura Jernigan. The photographs used natural light. I found them outstanding. After expressing my delight in her work, Laura Jernigan collected the photographs in a book and let me have it for six months. From these photographs, I did the Children's Collection.
